Couture or Wearable Art Word Game Design Competition
EXTENDED Deadline for Submissions of Designs Online: April 11th, 2011
The winning fabricated design will be the featured "look" at The 2011 Mobius Wearable Art Runway Show which will take place on Friday May 6, 2011 at Mobius, 725 Harrison Avenue, Boston, MA, USA. The event take place during the closing weekend of "A Tool Is A Mirror" curated by Elizabeth Keithline, a group exhibition which is part of this year's Boston Cyberarts Festival (April 22nd through May 8th, 2011).
Description:
Call for best "couture" or "artistic" design using The Word Game Fabric, a 44 inch wide, 5-yard piece of cream egyptian cotton (made in Pakistan) which was stencilled using multi-colored fabric markers and 3 font sizes using words submitted through an online game called Word Game via Mobius' facebook page Mobius, Inc.
Competitors will submit their designs via online email and attached jpeg/pdf files only to:
Jane @ mobius . org (remove spaces before emailing).
To ensure anonymity during the panel review process, neither the competitor's name, nor any information identifying commissions, awards, reviews, and/or presentations should appear on any of your design sketches, text explanations, lists of materials used.
The winning design will be selected by the panel of guest judges and judges, and announced on April 18, 2011.
The Word Game Fabric will be given to the designer (or his/her fabricators) and will have approximately 2 weeks (depending how far away the fabric is to be mailed) to fabricate the winning design to be worn at the Mobius Wearable Art Runway Show on May 6th, 2011.
Once the winning designer has been announced, all submitted designs will be posted online in a blog along with any accompanying information which each contestant provided. In addition, documentation for all submitted designs (with the name of each designer properly credited) may, at the discretion of the co-curators, be used in a video to accompany the runway show and/or blog.
Rules/Restrictions:
1. There is no restriction in terms of the type of design submitted, that is, designs may be "couture" or "artistic", and may in fact be more than a single piece as long as the complete look can be worn by one model in a runway walk.
2. Each designer must include as much of the Word Game fabric as possible in their design.
3. There is no restriction on additional materials/media used by each designer however when the design documentation is submitted, a list of additional material/media planned should be included.
4. There is no restriction on who fabricates the winning design but the winning designer is responsible for providing their own team of fabricators.
5. There is a PROFESSIONAL MODEL AVAILABLE for the runway show however the winning designer may provide their own model and must provide any hair/make-up personnel (if desired) to complete their winning look.
6. If the winning designer can not be present at the 2011 Mobius Wearable Art Runway Show he/she must provide a representative to bring the winning piece(s) to the Mobius Wearable Art Runway Show on May 6th, along with any changes to the description for the MC, and to be in charge of the model and accompanying hair/make-up personnel.
7. Location of each designer is not restricted however wherever The Word Game Fabric is sent must be close enough to Boston, MA, USA so that whoever is fabricating the design can do so in time for the winning fabricated design to be in the Mobius Wearable Art Runway Show on May 6th, 2011.
8. Each designer will retain ownership of their own designs and the winner designer will keep the winning fabricated piece(s). However by submitting to this competition, each designer is giving Mobius and the co-curators permission to post their designs online as long as each designer is properly credited.

5. The postal address where you would like the fabric sent if you win if this is not the same as 4.
6. Model's name/Model's email address
7. Your bio (100 words or less) as you would like it to appear on the blog after the winner is announced
8. Past related projects (optional)
9. Any weblinks you would like listed on the blog after the winner is announced
10. Your city, state/province, country as you would like it posted on the blog and possibly in a group design video
11. Design description as you would like it announced by the MC (can be modified later if you wish)
12. If you cannot be present at the Mobius Wearable Art Runway Show, please provide name/email/phone number of the person who will represent you at the show.
*13. Sketches/renderings of the design, brief written descriptions, list of additional materials/media planned in the form of attached jpeg and/or pdf formatted files.
*14. if you would like to submit video for review the judges, please upload it on Vimeo, set it to private, make it downloadable and send the password and link along with your submission (Jane will then download your video and upload it into her own Vimeo account with an identifer so you will remain anonymous).
Once you have emailed your submission, you will be sent back verification of receipt of your submission along with a unique ID number which will be used as a tag to items 13. and 14. to preserve anonymity during the review process from the panel of guest judges and judges. If you ever need to add/modify information to/in your submission, please include that ID number in your subsequent emails.

Elena Sanders, lead draper at The Boston Conservatory, is a costumer, clothing engineer, and steampunk designer who was one of 5 featured designers at Boston Fashion Week 2009 and was voted one of "25 Most Stylish Bostonians of 2009" by the Boston Globe. Kathleen McDermott is a hat artist. You may have seen her gorgeous creations at galas and parties around town. She has taught Fashion History at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design for twelve years, and for several years at the Rhode Island School of Design. She is also the author and illustrator of a wonderful new book on the history of fashion called "Style for All: Why Fashion, Invented by Kings, Now Belongs to All of Us." Christine Liu, community manager for Urbanspoon, careens around the city one darling bite at a time. Her writings on local food, drink and fashion have been published in The Boston Globe, Boston Magazine and Budget Travel. She also co-founded the first Seamless Computational Couture fashion show in 2005 with Nick Knouf at the MIT Media Lab. A resident of Somerville, Christine is often seen indulging her penchant for small pleasures, like squirting sriracha on noodles, sipping negronis at midnight, and taking her MacBook for refreshing little walks.
Deborah Everett is a critic and arts writer covering the art scene in New York and internationally for over 10 years. Her reviews and articles deal with all media of contemporary visual art, as well as analyses of art issues and trends. She has also written about architecture and art historical subjects, and has composed catalogue essays for exhibitions at Long Island University and the Architectural League in New York City. She has been published in Art in America, ZingMagazine, Cover magazine, and articlemagazine.com, as well as writing currently for Sculpture magazine and NY Arts.
Judges:
Alison Safford received a BFA in sculpture from Carnegie Mellon University, and an MFA in sculpture from Alfred University. She has shown regionally and nationally, in traditional galleries, alternative spaces, and in site-specific community based projects. Safford has worked as an arts educator at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, as an adjunct instructor at Hampshire College, and currently teaches at the Cambridge School of Weston. Her past residencies include the Atlantic Center for the Arts in Florida, The Vermont Studio Center, the Jay County Arts Center in Indiana, Sculpture Space in Utica, NY and at Bubec Sculpture Studio in Prague, Czech Republic. She has given talks on her work at the Everson Museum in Syracuse, NY, the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, Oregon and at University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. Her recent shows include Video Show at Raritan Valley Community College in New Jersey, and Insatiable at the Kniznick Gallery at Brandeis University. In 2003 she was a recipient of a Massachusetts Cultural Council Grant in the area of installation/ sculpture.
James Ellis Coleman received his MFA from Massachusetts College of Art. He uses video, photography, mixed media and performance to express. He is a member of the Mobius Artists Group and co-curated The Prostitution of Art/Signs of Our Times exhibition/performances in 2010.
