The 2011 Mobius Wearable Art Runway Show Hits the Road!

In June 2011, Jacqueline Ganim-DeFalco of the non-profit arts collaborative Society for the Encouragement of the Arts (seARTS) invited all of the designers from the 2011 Mobius Wearable Art Runway Show to present their pieces from that show and/or new/other wearable art work at a Wearable Arts/Fashion event entitled Celebrate Wearable Art! to take place in Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA on Sunday September 25th, 2011. The show would be a combination of a seARTS Benefit and a showcase of local "wearable" artists who have been doing their own show for the past 5 years during the holiday period.

Thankfully fourteen of the original designers were able to make room in their schedules to participate in this "tour" of the 2011 Mobius Wearable Art Runway Show!

I was born in Slovenia where I finished an art high school. While in school I managed to publish 3 illustrations - 2 of which are children books. The big bronze sculpture visible in my gallery was also made in that period of time and is now situated in Oslo. I also worked as a paper delivery girl, cast maker in a bronze shop, room cleaner in a hotel, etc. Now I am studying Fine art in Liverpool UK. Here I was working as a personal assistant to a local artist.

"Little Red Re-Design". The skirt is made from 1800 red rubber bands. The top is made from a broken umbrella. The idea is to take normal objects, especially ones that are broken or ready to be thrown away, and give them new life by transforming them into something interesting and unexpected.

Steam Punk Bug

The originally design was inspired by my friend Troy Kidwells band Fluttr Effect. Her debut was at the Middle East club a few years ago dancing with the band on stage. Now the bug has it's own life roaming the dark crevices in the city looking for a place to land.

Jennifer Hicks M.F.A., R.Y.T, director of CHIMERAlab Dance Theatre, is a performer, choreographer, teacher and visual artist. She received her MFA from Naropa University in Contemporary Performance, her BFA from Tufts University and Degree in Fine Arts from The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, in Boston. She has been a guest artist at Naropa University in the MFA Contemporary Performance Department for several years and North Western University in Louisiana, among other institutions. Jennifer has won several prestigious awards for her work including The Traveling Scholars Award from The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and Franklin Furnace for an installation/performance about medicine called “Training For Uncertainty”. She is a member of the performance collective in Boston called Mobius and an original founding member of the former performance collective called Pan 9, also based in Boston.

As a dancer, Jennifer studied ballet, modern and jazz since childhood but began her interest in Butoh back in the mid 1980's. She began to study Butoh seriously in the early 1990’s at the San Francisco Butoh Festival. Her main performance influences are Tatsumi Hijikata, KATSURA Kan, Maureen Fleming, Wendell Beavers, Barbara Dilley, puppet work, early cartoons, nature and silent films. She has been dancing in KASTURA Kans International Dance Company since 1999 and has her own company based in Boston. She has been teaching movement, creating original theatre and performing for over 25 years. Ms. Hicks is a certified Shintaido Instructor, and a Registered Yoga Teacher with The National Yoga Alliance.

She is a certified TranceDance International Facilitator studying with Wilbert Alix for over 10 years and assisting him in his workshops in Hawaii, Arizona, Massachusetts, and Texas. “This practice opened up a deep world for me of imagery, self discovery and group dynamics. Working with Wilbert has expanded my teaching practice, making me a better listener, caregiver and a braver human being in performance and in life.” - J. Hicks

This year Liv created "Walkin' The The Tightrope"- a Visual Art program that explores the connection between the art of sneaker design and the power self-expression with her third, fourth, and fifth grade students. Bethany Haeseler will be reworking her Fruitloops piece into a fuller garment for the runway show.

Bio:

At first glance, it is hard to recognize what some sculptural components are actually made of. Is this beautiful glass? It certainly looks like it, and it's in a gallery, but if the audience touches it, the stickiness exposes it's true nature. Like glass, the hard candy is fragile, but instead of being a vessel or being a piece of jewelry, it's intended to provide an option to be consumed.

My work explores body adornment, consumable artwork, and desire. Narrative stories influence the works, recreating aspects of past personal experience as a woman affected battles with Anorexia and Bulimia. In my work, I utilize techniques that I practice in creating kiln formed glass to make works with materials that mimic it: hard candy and sugar.

Like glass, the hard candy is fragile, but instead of being a vessel or being a piece of jewelry, it's intended to provide an option to be consumed. To a corset made of hard candy, I add Syrup of Ipecac to the formula, in order to induce vomiting as a way to temper the consumption of the sweets that might otherwise adorn the body as fat.

Through video, attendant to the candy piece, I present an image the experience of consuming beyond the point of satisfaction, in order to satisfy others. I also offered (safe) sweets as gifts to the audience in a performance work, the cravings of the audience are satisfied, while the artist is denied these very pleasures. Since this all comes down to memory, the process and even motion of making the works is as significant as the final product.
The use of performance and the human figure is especially integral to my work. Through performance and body adornment, I am able to express notions that may otherwise be lost or ignored. My body becomes the sculpture. Objects are crafted to accompany and document experiences.

I create artwork because I want to understand the world around me. It is through this process that I can sort through my thoughts and resolve my questions. Whether through material & process or the organization of words in poetry, it is the only way that I know how to view the world.

I am a recent recipient of a Franklin Furnace Grant, a project grant from Possible Futures in Atlanta GA, and a residency in Portland ME. I value design and craft and much of my practice is based around sewing, be it garments, sculptures, or wearable art pieces. I have several years experience working in the costume and fashion industry and therefore my work has become primarily wearable and interactive sculpture. I believe that fashion is a veritable manifestation of art and life colliding and this of utmost interest to me. A lot of my work circulates around the act of eliciting communal awareness through this channel.

Kira Lorenza Althaler and Florian Maria Sumerauer are presenting
costumes specially made for the performance band Flying Teeth (William
Haugh, Aaron Diskin). The Band was performing experimental
underwater-outerspace-sounds at Raphaela Riepl’s solo show “adorable
steamed sea urchin” at Open Source Gallery in Brooklyn, New York. The
costumes were made to integrate the band with the installations in the
show and vice versa.

The First piece that Kaela Cote-Stemmermann made is called stamp piece, made completely of stamps and packaging tape, ideal for keeping the rain off anyone. The second piece, called pagan sunset comes from her love of dance and is made from more traditional materials. These are the first of many pieces of wearable art that she hopes to make!

The piece is meant to play with the idea of transparency versus visibility, while experimenting with unconventional materials.

Insides Out is a sculptural garment designed and constructed by New York based artist L. Mylott Manning. The frock consists of 700 spools of thread in a variety of sizes and colors. Amongst the tangled threads a number of wooden vintage spools and contemporary plastic spools are embedded. The artist’s intent is to conceptually illuminate the importance of thread, a fastening material vital to the support of everyday life. Ms. Andert's Design for the Word Game fabric:

Evening gown of handpainted Egyptian cotton, featuring words from the Mobius Word Game; underskirt of dictionary pages and tulle. The bodice is embellished with Scrabble tiles; jewelry of the same to accessorize.

Project Description-

One piece gown, with boned bodice and underskirt. Over gown draping of The Word Game fabric; underskirt of dictionary pages, cut in dagged shaped. Bodice will be (most likely) of a collage of fabric and lace, accented with words spelled out in Scrabble tiles. Any other trims to the entire piece will be determined as the project progresses, but will not radically change the design as pictured.

Other materials to be used, besides the provided fabric- dictionary pages, Scrabble tiles, tulle, possibly lace and beads as well.

Accessories, to include a necklace and bracelet, of Scrabble tiles, will be included as well. Headpiece, or hair décor to be determined at a later date.

Bio:

Kimberly Andert is a wearable artist specializing in clothing and accessories with a vintage look and feel. Her love of historic costume, especially the highly ornamented Victorian and Edwardian periods, influences much of her work. She utilizes repurposed clothing (mostly silk) and vintage trims and laces, mixing them with modern fabrics to give a sense of romance, femininity and fantasy to all of her garments. Her working style is a collage of texture, featuring laces and trims, beads and sequins, feathers and fringe, ribbons and flowers-all the ingredients necessary to make a piece truly one of a kind.

Garment Name : Paradise Lost

Inspiration/concept commentary:

This piece is a memorial tribute to those lives and eco systems lost and affected by the 2010 gulf oil spill that took place off the gulf coast of the United States, during off shore commercial drilling practices. This piece is directly intended to emphasize the power and destructive realities of human induced catastrophic events while hi-lighting the beauty that is ever present in shaper and form regardless of the societal trauma. To create such a piece required me to study the physical and emotional effect. such an event has on the population closest the disaster site, and then to transform those raw emotion a new physical form.

Garment Description:

This wearable art form is comprised of recycled and found materials. Heat manipulated plastics where combined provide the primary body of the garment. Greige goods threads dipped in acrylic paint and gesso where then manipulated, dried and then added to the form layering and manipulating the piece as it was constructed. Hidden throughout the piece is a deconstructed taxidermy bird and a disintegrating american flag. The silhouette intentionally reflects the way oil when released from its natural resting place spreads uncontrollably.

Materials- plastic. Gesso, string, American flag, taxidermy duck- recycled/found objects.

Upon graduating from Maryland Institute College of Art with a degree in Fine Arts, June Monteiro interned as an assistant stylist for Kate O’Connor at L.A. Fashion Week. It was through this experience that she knew she wanted to pursue a career in design. After featuring her fun and edgy designs in multiple shows in Boston, Baltimore, Washington D.C. and Cape Cod,she decided to attain her Fashion Design degree from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

In 2010, June created ENAMOUR/ENAMOUR SPORT. She was featured in the Rising Design Fashion Show during Boston Fashion Week, where her designs made quite an impression, garnering positive reviews in publications such as the Boston Globe, Stuff Boston, and multiple fashion blogs.

Artist-designer Selina Narov presents truly unique combination of art and fashion. Using her original technique to paint on pure white silk, she creates fabrics inspired by nature. The purity and transparency of the air, the depth of the sky and the chaos of the ocean----the coexistence of all these ideas is what she strive to communicate through her work.

Throughout the last decade, Selina has developed new original technique of painting on fabric that she calls Lynx-Stone, a unique process that combines monotype printing with painting to produce unusual, striking colors and patterns. She brought her fine art background, experience in the 3D design and expertise in textiles to the world of fashion. Ms. Narov has created signature pieces of art couture clothing in numerous collections using her own unique painted fabric.

Selina received her Masters Degree in Applied Art from the Stroganoff College of Fine Arts and Design in Moscow, Russia. Ms. Narov achieved recognition working as a successful exhibit and interior designer for the National Foundation of Art and Design. She was a member of the Moscow Artist Guild and participated in the renowned Senesh Experimental Design Studio. Selina’s work has been included extensively at national and regional exhibitions in Russia.

Once in the United States, Selina Narov established her studio at the Boston Center for the Arts, where she has worked as a painter and textile designer. She is a member of New England Artist Trust and a recipient of several grants from Massachusetts Cultural Council. Her work has been exhibited in individual and group shows in New England and nationwide.

Selina Narov’s wearable art has been widely exhibited at the art shows in New England and nationwide. Her fabric designs have been commissioned by such famous names as Mary McFadden, Oscar de la Renta, and Tosca Couture.

She is a member of Silk Painters International and United South End Artists of Boston.

From Cohoes, New York, Katie Pray began playing the saxophone at
age 10. Her love for her instrument, which she then named ‘Goosey’ led
her to become a music teacher. She taught both elementary and high
school band in New York City. Her love and attention for her
saxophone would be split, when her twin sister Barbara interrupted her
passion by gifting her a sewing machine at her bridal shower. It must
have been a ‘twin’ thing, but Katie was instantly in love. Teaching
music by day, Katie began taking classes at the Fashion Institute of
Technology (F.I.T) at night. Ironically, the last class she took was
childrens wear, when she and her husband decided to start a family and
move back to Upstate New York. Now with her love divided many ways;
she plays robots, and flies rocket ships with her 4 year old son
Maceo, continues to work making clothing, and still performs on her
saxophone with the Capital Region Wind Ensemble. Pray was recently
chosen by BurdaStyle and Etsy to show in their DIY Fashion Show during
SXSW festival in Austin, TX. Her zipper out fit was also selected for
Best of February projects on the BurdaStyle blog. This zipper outfit
was originally created for a recycled fashion show, Discard Avant Garb
which takes place annually in Albany, NY. The zipper outfit weighs 8
lbs all by itself! Pray designs everything from childrens and womens

Arm Instrument is a touch-sensitive, wearable, digital instrument. Piezoelectric sensors are attached to a skintight spandex “shooter sleeve” worn by a performer. Signals from the piezo sensors are transmitted wirelessly to a computer and speakers. Players touch, tap, or stroke the wearer’s arm to elicit sound: my wife humming a pentatonic scale. Arm Instrument is an opportunity to explore the nuances of relationships between bodies in physical space, the experience of touch between strangers, and the slippage between “interface” and “performer” when interaction requires contact between bodies. Is this touch empowering? Objectifying? Comforting or uncomfortable? By using the human voice as my sound material I hope to magnify the impression of body-as-interface, and create an environment of closeness, sensuality, and unexpected recontextualization of human responses.

Arm Instrument represents my most direct (and, for me, most uncomfortable) experiment with the body’s potential to take on the characteristics of interface. Having once made a decision about the unique sound of this “instrument,” I leave other participants with the responsibility of creating music, interacting physically with my body, and making their own meanings from the exchange.

Arm Instrument is an exploration of my emotional and physical boundaries in social and public situations, and an experiment with my audience’s notions of what it means “to interact” and “to relate” to a person versus an interface.

The potentially dehumanizing aspects of digitally-mediated experience have been well-rehearsed in texts by Sherry Turkle (1), Nicholas Carr (2), and many others. It may be a truism that digital interfaces and mediatized experience have changed our relationships with people and our environment, but still the long-term nature and impact of these changes can’t be predicted. Without preconceptions, I want to discover what occurs when the modern tendency bemoaned by many to conflate the digital and the physical is made literal. Does a layer of digital data superimposed on the experience of touch make tactile interaction between strangers more or less intimate? More or less comfortable? In GoogleChat I explored the issues that arise from the notion that our relationship to digital interfaces embodies them with their own personae. With Arm Instrument my body itself becomes the interface and to interact means to enter into a relationship (however brief) with me.

When interacting with Arm Instrument, audience members are given the choice to acknowledge my presence inside the instrument, or to mentally erase our physical relationship from their manipulation of sound material. As a performer inside the piece, I am faced with a similar choice: do I remain a passive conduit for another’s experience, or do I let my own responses and physical existence become an unignorable part of the process of interaction?

As an introverted person who is uncomfortable with the physical proximity of strangers, I find I need to adopt an unfamiliar persona in order to make myself a successful “frame” for Arm Instrument. My wife Jen’s voice in the piece adds both an additional layer of intimacy and yet another uncomfortable source of personal exposure. As audience members make music with my piece, I can’t help feeling that the details of my intimate relationships, sexual orientation, and personal identity are on display for manipulation by others. Will this ultimately be a liberating, painful, or desensitizing experience, or something quite different?

Emulating animal sounds is something very common among kids. Especially toddlers that experiment with their voices and tactile sense.

Originally a wearable musical instrument, from Jacket Nicholson to Jacket Jacketson, a portable toy for kids.

Since I spent long terms of time with my son Raimundo in the stroller, while living in NYC, I thought of a good way to keep him busy and also learning, would be to have a portable or wearable play station.

Soft farm animals buttons sewn in the jacket (sheep, cow, pig) trigger animal sound when the kid presses them. It has an interior plastic set with the circuit-board, speaker and switches to be removed, so as to wash it exterior as a regular fabric jacket.

fallen post-apocalyptic cyber angel

This is a fallen post-apocalyptic cyber angel, inspired by the online web character, KK from Freak Angels by Warren Ellis and Paul Duffield. The skirt design was constructed from old backpacks and purses. The corset is made with embroidered rubber panels, and PVC socket attachments and pipes. The metal bra was custom made from designer, Brooksbot75 on Etsy.com. The wings and spray-painted with granite glazed paint to give a metallic, stone appearance. Further construction to this design will include, a PVC hair piece or head-dress, added extension layers to the skirt, and found metal objects.

LeeLoo loves to slash up the old and make into something new and unusual. She is a big fan of shock art, and loves to collage pieces together that you wouldn't think belong. Rather than acquiring new material, she reconstitutes anything she can find in her closet or under her bed, into something wearable.

Mitumba means the discarded textiles, that come from the

With this new label they are reintegrated into the Western market as

European wardrobes into commercial container collection and hike a
little later on each African market for sale. Mitumba is the garbage
of “western” prosperity consumption - and a good business.

- mitumBACK - reverse engineering globalization - changed the
direction of this global process: The project buys donated old clothes
back in Tanzania, and fair pay the African embroiderers to handmade
labels which signify these clothes as a new way of art and cultural
understanding. With this new label they are reintegrated into the
Western market and on special occasions they are sold in the so called
“mitumBACK - pop up flagship store” - where you can see all of the
works and informations we have gained by doing this project.

- mitumBACK - a label trans fair - wear it, be a part of the idea. Pay
as you please - but with three different price models to give you some
insight behind the different relations of the price of the former
donation and with the profit gained through the proceeds of the sale
we try to finance schools ( for example mungumaji school in singida
where we also held lectures about our project) or other direct
microfinancing projects.

- mitumBACK isn´t just a new label, it is also an experiment to
rethink global structures, codes and habits based on classical models,
by art, science and fashion.

Casa Abrigo Portátil

In 2003 Alicia collaborated with the Spanish architect Andres Jaque to create a performance for his Casa Abrigo Portátil (Portable House Coat). Also known as the Automatic Material, the suit not only clothes but offers shelter and a space to entertain others. It is equipped with the keys to feeling at home in the contemporary city. It can be worn, or opened up and spread out on the ground. It contains a section of lawn, fabric that expands to provide shelter and private space, its own lighting and even its own butane cylinder connected to a gas burner for cooking.

Jaque explained that rather than thinking in terms of a suit, his objective was to create a role, that of a host or Techno-Geisha who, armed with the suit, could attend to the needs and desires of the inhabitants of the contemporary city. In the performance Alicia employed the suit in various ways, exploring its possible uses and especially the communication and relations that it facilitated with others. She became a hostess, offering others the opportunity to relax and feel at home in her hospitable island adrift in the modern urbis. Here’s a quote from the catalogue of the exhibition it was a part of:

Alicia has no human limits. Her body blurs into an enveloping prosthesis which modifies the contexts she visits. The Improved-Alicia is the techno-host of the contemporary city. She supplies energy, softens surfaces, organizes automatic picnics and opens bubbles of intimacy.

Alicia is keen to repeat the performance but substituting the section of lawn for a garden of herbs or sprouts that she could pick and serve during the performance.

Edible Hat Workshops

Ali&Cia’s Edible Hats are made with all manner of foods; fruit, vegetables, sweets, snacks, baked goods and the like, which are attached to a base support that offers the stability necessary to achieve volume, both upwards and outwards. For the bases, they often recycle food-related items such as baskets, woven mats, paper plates and trays, place mats etc. Ali&Cia explain that while some participants may at first be hesitant, the familiarity of food encourages them to shed inhibitions and channel their creativity in a much more effective way than working with other artistic materials would. The catharsis that ensues highlights the aesthetic, sensorial and festive value of food and each hat reflects the singular irony and genius of its creator. Far from a frivolous affair, Alicia asserts that

“Just as the goddess Athena was born winged from the head of Zeus, so these edible hats relate to the world of ideas, to the collective subconscious that arises from the head. These hats are, for me, like altars that bear the most sacred and peaceful offerings.”

The workshop culminates in a procession in which all the participants show off their creations on a red carpet.

Founded almost 15 years ago by culinary historian and former psychology professor Alicia Rios and her niece, the architect Barbara Ortiz, Ali&Cia specializes in the collective creation of edible installations/performances, reinterpretations of the world around us. They work with volunteers to create edible libraries, borders, greenhouses, and entire cities, all of which culminate in public acts of collective catharsis through their consumption. In 2007 their work Eat London, where an 60m2 edible model of the city of London created by 200 volunteers from 14 different community groups was presented in Trafalgar Square and devoured by 5000 people, won the Visit London gold award for best celebration of cultural diversity, 2007.

Several of their works involve edible outfits and we’re highlighting two in particular below. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been possible to stage them for this iteration of the wearable art runway show due to space and time constraints on May 6th.

Inspired by the richness of the mountainous landscape of Trentino
South-Tirol, Grandiflora is a project that explores the relationship
between nature, local traditions and the clothing of the body.

Manufactured only using natural materials found in the woods, the
dress elaborates and combines some of the mythical pagan figures from
the popular local tradition of the Alps, giving life to a mysterious
presence inhabiting the woods, a wild and untamed woman, Grandiflora.

she completed in 2007 the MA in Contemporary Performance Making at
Brunel University.

Carla Esperanza’s work intersects different artistic practices such as
live performance, writing and image making, combining a variety of
experiences and collaborations that span theatre, live art and visual
culture. Her work originates from personal suggestions connected to
the human and bodily dimension as well as to site specificity. She
engages with the body and the politics of representation, using
movement, text and visuals to investigate social and cultural issues.
She strongly believes in collaborative practice and research-based
process, as she works on different projects both as artist as well as
producer/curator. She is interested in the dynamics of artistic
production, alternative modes for self-learning, as well as
sustainable and independent artistic practice.

She is part of Reloading Images, as well as Associate Artist of
Pacitti Company and SPILL Festival of Performance.

"You All Know Me" 2011

In my early twenties, I knit for a living. I had moved to New York with a BFA in fibers. When I found a job that employed the skills I had learned and studied in college I was elated, most of my classmates were waiting tables or doing temp-work. The knitting boom was huge in New York and while I taught knitting classes by day, I worked through many nights, knitting specialty items for elite and wealthy patrons, or samples for fashion week. I felt that I was doing a great service to my students, passing on to them a skill that they could use indefinitely. I was the head of the household, paying the rent and bills that my then-boyfriend, a musician was unable to fund. I worked for two years before it started to hurt. The first time I noticed the pain, I was working on a baby’s sweater, commissioned by a wealthy grandmother who confided in me that she would tell her daughter and son-in-law that she had made it herself for their newborn daughter. Indignant, I accepted my pay. I had made the sweater overnight between business days.

I started dropping things from my right hand, losing muscle control during spasms. My fingers and thumb began to naturally curl inward to my palm, which my boyfriend teasingly referred to as, “the claw.” I worked perilously, if not for clients for paid work, on garments for myself. I was confident that excluding my hand from consumer culture made an impact. It was my revolt to knit, my political and moral stance. A slow pace was more satisfying to me than the instant gratification of any commodity. I left New York to attend graduate school in San Francisco. I continued to work with my hands knitting a new sweater to wear for each semester review. The other work that I produced was wrought in obsessive embroidery, hypnotically tedious bobbin lace, lace-knitting, and dense hyperbolic crochet. By the time I earned my master of fine arts, I had dislocated my shoulder, burnt through the tendons in my arm, and had premature arthritis in my hand. I hated the pain I and I hated the notion that my body was silencing my voice.

After the experience of working with my hands to live, I find it impossible to ignore the plight of garment workers around the globe. How simple it is to subvert the bodies and pain of people who we cannot see, to take their work which produces the relics of our culture for granted. To make things, to learn to draft, weave, cut and sew a piece of cloth , the effort that it involves stays with those who learn it forever. It is impossible to forget something that you have made with your hands, to forget anything you have touched.

Digital Mallarme is an exploration of poetic text as virtual social experiment, a moving digital interpretation of Stephane Mallarme's Un Coup De Des. The garment is transformed into a power book of poetic verse and imagery.

Bios:

Kathy Bruce (costume design and performer) is an installation artist based in New York City. She received an M.F.A degree from Yale University School of Art and Architecture and certificate from The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
She is currently the recipient of a 2011-2012 Fulbright Hayes Senior Scholar
Teaching and Research Grant for Puno, Peru and is also the recipient of a 2010-11 Pollock-Krasner Foundation individual artist award. A feature article on her work appeared in the 2010 May-June issue of Sculpture magazine and a forth-coming article on her sculptural installations will appear in the April 2011 edition of Bamboo Magazine. Her work explores the subject of female mythological figures.

James A. Cook (Videographer) is currently Chair of the 3-D Division in the School of Art at the University of Arizona. He received his B.F.A. degree from the University of California at Berkeley and M.F.A. degree from the California College of the Arts. His sculpture and video work have been extensively exhibited nationally and internationally, and he has participated in residencies, conferences, and symposia in the United States, Spain, India, Nepal, Japan, and Bulgaria. He has received numerous grants and fellowships, including the Fulbright Regional Research Fellowship to the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia, the Freeman Foundation Fellowship to India and Nepal, the Asian Cultural Council Fellowship (Rockefeller Foundation) to Japan, and the Arizona Commission for the Arts.

Alastair R. Noble (technical) is an environmental/installation artist and printmaker, his cross-disciplinary work engages in contemporary cultural issues. Although originally from the UK he has lived and work in New York City for over 30 years and has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally, including Peru, Chile, Bulgaria, UK. His practice is a response to architecture and the natural environment and investigates particular sites in the context of literature, poetry or philosophical texts of authors such as; Mallarmé, Marinetti, Mayakovsky, Wittgenstein. The Library of Babel and On the Exactitude of Science by Jorge Luis Borges have been the subjects of his recent projects. The latter text he transposed into a series of environmental interventions entitled Mapping Arcadia these are investigations into alternative methods of mapping the landscape. Additionally he writes on sculpture and architecture for international sculpture magazines and journals. He has taught and lectured at numerous colleges and universities where he has organized symposia on the role of Public Sculpture.

My first experience of making jewelry dates back to 1990. I carried this passion through 20 years, while becoming a professional classical pianist. I always believed in the power of Beauty, and music education brought me to the deeper understanding of all the components of it. Composition, balance, style, proportions and, most importantly, individuality. I did not step far away from my profession, because I am trying to create a “Visual music”. I get inspired by almost anything: old photo, colors of sunset, person, dress, vintage button, rhythm of drums…, anything that is unique. Each design carries piece of my heart. Just like a melody through sounds, in my jewelry I am trying to bring the emotion out through the shape and color. And just like in music, I find it very important to have a room for interpretation.

BIO: Upon graduating from Maryland Institute College of Art with a degree in Fine Arts, June Monteiro interned as an assistant stylist for Kate O’Connor at L.A. Fashion Week. It was through this experience that she knew she wanted to pursue a career in design. After featuring her fun and edgy designs in multiple shows in Boston, Baltimore, Washington D.C. and Cape Cod,she decided to attain her Fashion Design degree from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

In 2010, June created ENAMOUR/ENAMOUR SPORT. She was featured in the Rising Design Fashion Show during Boston Fashion Week, where her designs made quite an impression, garnering positive reviews in publications such as the Boston Globe, Stuff Boston, and multiple fashion blogs.

PAST RELATED PROJECTS: "SMARTIE Dress"- made with over 1,100 Smartie candy wrappers. It was shown at the MassArt fashion show, as well as in the Natick Collection in 2008. It was on display at "Sugar Heaven" candy store in Boston in 2010. "BOSTON MAGAZINE Dress" - made with over 70 Boston Magazine covers and 600 shredded pages from the magazine. It was shown at Simon's Mall Fashion Now event, Burlington, in 2010.

DESIGN DESCRIPTION: Using the origin of where the Word Game fabric came from as her inspiration, June Monteiro created the Word Game dress, with traditional Pakistani womens clothing in mind, creating a dynamic wrapped bodice, paired with the american cultural style lines of the chevron.

BRIEF DESIGN DESRIPTION: My design is inspired by the design lines of traditional Pakistani clothing (using the fabrics origin), but I incorporated classic american lines,like the chevron, to blend both cultural styles together.
